UNCG students are learning more than just the hard skills of their disciplines — they're getting the “soft skills,” too.

Soft skills include how to effectively introduce yourself and put others at ease. How to mingle in business functions. How to do a great business lunch.

About 130 students were a part of last November's UNCG Career Services Etiquette Dinner. At tables of eight, students chatted among themselves and with alumni and local business leaders as they enjoyed a fine dining experience. It was also a learning experience. Every delicious course came with PowerPoint slides, tips, a fun pop quiz with prizes, and time for questions.

Students learned that when passing an item such as a breadbasket, offer it to person on your left, then take a piece, then pass it to the right. About how to follow the lead of the host at the table. That the wait staff can be very helpful — and when you treat them courteously, it reflects well on you. And ultimately, to keep in mind that eating is secondary — the point of any business meal is to interact.

Another big event is Schmooza Palooza, where students mingle with alumni and corporate leaders in Cone Ballroom.

Schmooza Palooza helps students learn to “work a room” as they study the art of “schmoozing” at business events. As they enjoy appetizers, students learn about the finer points of networking as they speak with alumni and other professionals who've volunteered to be a part of the event.

At each of these events, the focus is on those important soft skills. The ones that allow you to mix readily with prospective clients … that help you shine when having an interview over lunch … that can help you land that first job … and land that promotion.
